As I watched the reports on Friday December 30th on Fox News regarding the current status of the GOP candidates in the Iowa caucus (Yes!!! Ron Paul is in first place and still gaining momentum!! ), something stated by a Rick Santorum campaign staffer being interviewed rubbed me very much the wrong way.
The staffer said Santorum (if elected) was going to “Empower the American family” in order to help realize the American peoples’ potential to stimulate the economy.
Empower me? What the heck was he talking about? I was born empowered! Needless to say, I was incredulous that he would use such a word in trying to woo conservatives. So I checked Santorum’s 2012 presidential website and sure enough, empowering Americans is a center piece theme of his platform.

Now it could very well be the case that I am having an overly exaggerated response to Santorum’s desire to empower Americans should he succeed and become the president of the United States. Maybe my problem with Santorum seeking to empower me is simply one of semantics and his agenda is right in line with many of my principles. But as a lover of liberty and someone who places a high premium on clear communication and word choice, it is irksome that Santorum and candidates like him seeking the GOP nomination can be so paternalistic. It may be a subtle thing, but “Empowering Americans” is indicative of what is really wrong with what government has become in the USA.
You know what a desirable conservative candidate for the Office of President of the United States can do for me and the American people who are like me? Simply get the hell out of our way and make that your campaign promise.
We are endowed by our creator already empowered. The Constitution is the means by which We the People were to grant limited powers to our government. How badly things have become where now presidential candidates seeking to be the head of our federal government are campaigning on a promise to empower us.
Please Mr. Santorum and others like you who seek to run for office as conservatives who will empower me. Don’t do me any favors. I know you mean well. But with all sincerity, just get the hell out of my way and I will be just fine!
